who we are
The host center of the study, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (HUCSH), is established 6 years back as an independent unit under the department of surgery by Dr. Ephrem Gebrehana, the Pioneer Orthopaedic Surgeon for the University. Numerous Orthopaedic surgeons have played a pivotal role for the development of the orthopaedic care over the course of the mentioned period.
Currently the host department leading and running few disciplinary and thematic researches both locally and nationally including this one under the leadership of Dr Mengistu Gebreyohanes Mengesha, Research coordinator of the department.
The current study is entitled to participate 8 research tertiary centers from different corners of the country, namely, Departments of Orthopedics and Traumatology at Bahirdar University, Gondar University, Assela University, Jimma University, Jigjiga University, Wachemo University, Haromiya University and Hawassa University as a host center.
The study is aligned with AO-alliance country initiative with a theme of “Improving fracture care”. The study variables have been tested by a pilot study undertaken at the host center over a course of 6 months. The interesting findings of the Pilot phase of the study has been presented at different international online meetings including International Federation of Musculoskeletal research society (IFMRS), Harvard global Orthopedic collaborative and Bethune international roundtable meeting. We strongly believe the national data pool will bring many interesting detrimental characteristics of the Bone setters’ practice into the public view and hence bring a significant change in the growth milestones of modern Musculoskeletal injury care in the country.

What we do
Currently the Host Center have five permanent staff Orthopaedic surgeons aiming to give high quality clinical care. We have been highly involved in national and international Collaborations to scale up the orthopaedic service of the country and teaching- learning activities of the Institution. The study partner institutions also are tertiary centers of the country with a big share of engagement in Medical and resident teaching practice besides the high volume of clinical care. Now a days we are highly engaged on problem solving clinical studies in order to practice evidence-based medicine (EBM).
